Michigan City, Indiana, is located in LaPorte County, on the shores of Lake Michigan. The city, which was incorporated in 1836, was originally developed as the northern terminus of the Old Michigan Railroad. Today, Michigan City is a popular tourist destination for weekenders from Chicago, which lies just 58 miles (93 kilometers) west.

Community festivals include a Summerfest in June, and the city's own Pioneer Days in September. Michigan City is home to The Festival Players Guild theater group that puts on productions year-round. During the summer months, the Dunes Summer Theatre also offers performances to city residents and visitors.

Michigan City has venues to please the young and young at heart, such as the Washington Park Zoo. And Blue Chip Casino has something for those who want to try their luck.

Nearby Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore runs for nearly 25 miles (40 kilometers) along the shores of Lake Michigan, and covers a total area of approximately 15,000 acres (6,070 hectares), including beaches, sand dunes, wetlands, and scenic woodlands!
