Morristown, New Jersey

Morristown is a town in north central New Jersey, 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of Newark and 29 miles (47 kilometers) west of New York City. It is the county seat of Morris County, and home to 18,544 people.

Morristown is home to a large number of heritage sites and attractions. In 1779, local resident Mrs. Jacob Ford Jr. offered her home to General George Washington, Mrs. Washington, and the army's staff officers. Visitors can learn more about this chapter of the Revolutionary War at the Morristown National Historical Park, which offers tours of the Ford Mansion, demonstrations of 18th century life, and other interpretive programs. Another popular destination is Historic Speedwell Village, the birthplace of the telegraph.

To learn more about the community's eventful past, visit the Morris County Historical Society, the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, Schuyler Hamilton House, or the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. A must-see attraction is the Morris Museum, which houses 48,700 objects related to history, science, art, and theater. The museum also hosts traveling exhibitions, performances, and educational programs.

Modern attractions include the many shops and eateries found in Morristown's charming downtown, the farmers' market, and the annual Festival on the Green. The 1,154-acre (467-hectare) Lewis Morris Park offers extensive recreational areas to suit all ages and interests. Here you can boat, swim, and fish on the lake; enjoy horse-back riding, off-road biking, and a variety of sports; or relax with a picnic and outdoor concert. In the winter, the park provides an ideal site for skating, sledding, and cross-country skiing. Looking for some local entertainment? Try a performance by the Colonial Symphony or the Community Theatre.
