Muncie is located in eastern Indiana along the banks of the White River. While Indiana is often identified as a farming state, Muncie's economy and identity is tied to both natural gas discovery and large-scale glass production. Despite this industry, Muncie is surrounded by picturesque rural landscape and has a heartland sensibility. In the mid-19th century, the Ball Corporation moved to Muncie. At the time, they were a mid-sized company known for making glass-lined containers in Buffalo, New York. As is the case today, glass making of the period required lots of heat and large quantities of fuel. Muncie's natural gas reserves and affordable real estate costs made it an ideal location for the company to relocate to. As the demand for glass products increased across the US, Muncie and the Ball Corporation shot to notoriety. Today, Muncie's Ball State University and Ball Hospital remind residents of the family (and major industry) that contributed so much to local development. Following the success of glass production, automobile parts production and tool-and-die operations moved into Muncie in the 1920s. With a population of only 67,430, Muncie has a surprisingly large quantity of cultural activities: from short-run performances to the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, Ball State's Emens Auditorium has something for everyone. Other local venues include the Muncie Civic Theater, which traces its heritage back to 1929. Muncie also has a world-class art collection, including works by Rembrandt, Edgar Degas, Winslow Homer, and Alexander Calder. Local festivals include RiverFest, the Farm Festival, the Summer Heat Balloon Championship, and the Festival of Trees and Light. See our 0 Jobs in Muncie, Indiana Websites for this CityGovernment:
