The terrain of the Old North State ranges from mountains in the west to coastal in the east. Outdoor activities include camping, hiking, rock climbing, swimming, fishing, boating, and cycling. The state is covered with 29 parks, many natural areas, and four recreation areas – and some of the country's most beautiful beaches. The state tree is the pine, poetically shadowing the hills with evergreen.

The state population is 8,407,248, and major cities include Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, Winston-Salem, and Fayetteville. Professional sports teams are mainly based in Charlotte – the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Sting – along with the Hurricanes in Durham and Raleigh. Babe Ruth hit his first homerun in Fayetteville.

Companies like Krispy Kreme Doughnut and Pepsi were founded in the state, but major industries include furniture, tobacco, brick, and textile production. Perhaps more famous, the Wright Brothers made the first successful powered flight in North Carolina.
