The city of Sparks, Nevada, is located just three miles (five kilometers) east of Reno and 31 miles (50 kilometers) north of Carson City. It has a population of 66,346 and is part of Washoe County. Sparks enjoys a high desert climate with four seasons and sunshine during 80% of the year! With so many gorgeous days ahead, get out and enjoy the Reno-Sparks-Lake Tahoe region's 60 gaming locations, 40 golf courses, and 18 world-class ski resorts. Birdwatchers should take a drive along the Pyramid Lake Scenic Byway, which leads to one of the world's largest desert lakes, and an abundance of migrating waterfowl. Back in town, why not brush up on the city's history at the Sparks Heritage Museum? Mining and the Central Pacific Railroad are two industries that shaped the community's early history, and the museum houses excellent artifacts and exhibits. Also stop by the Chinese Memorial, which honors the thousands of Chinese workers who helped to build the railroad. The Parks and Recreation Department offers year-round sports and recreation programs and manages great facilities like the Alf Sorensen Community Center. Sparks is also home to great annual festivals like the Best in the West Rib Cook-off, Euro Fest, Oktoberfest, and the Brew Ha Ha Festival.
