St. Peter, Minnesota

St. Peter is a city of 9,747 set in southern Minnesota. It is located 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of Mankato and 68 miles (109 kilometers) southwest of the Twin Cities. St. Peter is the seat of Nicollet County.

Fortunately, you don't have to die to get a glimpse of the Pearly Gates. Right here in the Minnesota River Valley, you'll find a pair of beautiful white iron gates, adorned with cherubs and lights, and bearing the inscription "Saint Peter's Pearly Gates."

St. Peter is also home to the Nicollet County Historical Society and most of its historic sites. For centuries, the Traverse des Sioux (the crossing place of the Sioux) has been a crossroads for the Dakota Indians, European fur traders, and pioneer farmers. Today, the site has been restored to natural prairie, and a self-guided tour will introduce you to Native culture, local history, and the beauty of the Minnesota River Valley. In 1851, the US government and Dakota Indians signed a treaty which opened the land to millions of settlers, and led to the creation of the town of Traverse des Sioux. The Treaty Site History Center has a great display on the treaty and its ramifications, along with changing displays on other topics. The E. St Julien Cox House was the home of Eugene Cox, St. Peter's first mayor and a Senate representative. Visitors can admire the beautifully restored house, and chat with costumed guides about life in the 1800s.

The Soderlund Pharmacy Museum is a unique attraction that celebrates the role of pharmacy in American culture. Its fascinating displays include an antique apothecary, old soda fountains, and a collection of show globes that were once to advertise drugstores.

St. Peter's offers fantastic festivals throughout the year, including the Nicollet County Fair in August, the Rock Bend Folk Festival in September, and Winterfest in February.

Looking for some outdoor fun? You can tee off at the Shoreland Country Club, or take a drive along the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway. In addition to beautiful scenery, the river valley also offers bird-watching, geo-caching, hiking, and cross-country skiing, and other recreational opportunities.
