Situated on the northern border of Ohio state and the western end of Lake Erie, Toledo is the county seat of Lucas County and the fourth largest city in Ohio. Nicknames for Toledo include T-Town and the Glass City, due to its long history of innovation in the glass industry. Toledo is located at the intersection of highways I-80/I-90 and I-75 ("The Crossroads of America"), and it's also the nation's third busiest rail hub and one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes. Its accessibility has made Toledo the market city for northwest Ohio (a region with a population of more than one million people), and provided Toledo with a high concentration of medical facilities and retail establishments. Toledo is a city that's always changing, and the largest project currently underway is the construction of the Maumee River Crossing on Interstate 280, just northeast of downtown Toledo. When completed, this 400-foot (122-meter) tall bridge will become a distinctive feature on Toledo's skyline. Manufacturing is the best known industry in Toledo, and the big three automotive companies (Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler) all have factories in the metro area. However, the industry that currently employs the most Toledoans is not manufacturing, but healthcare, and the University of Toledo, have recently supplanted Jeep as the largest employers in the city. For cultural buffs, Toledo offers its own opera, symphony, and ballet companies, as well as the Toledo Museum of Art, which houses a modest, but internationally acclaimed collection. For family outings, consider the local science center – the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) – or the Toledo Zoo, which has consistently been rated one of the 10 best zoos in the US. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy several public and private courses in and around Toledo. The best known of these is the Inverness Club, which has hosted the PGA Championship and four US Open Championships. Nature lovers can delight in exploring the Toledo Botanical Garden, the 47-acre (19-hectare) R. A. Stranahan Arboretum, and the approximately 8,000 acres (3,237 hectares) of natural habitat found in the Toledo Metro Parks. For work or play, Toledo is a great destination to consider.
