Vicksburg, Mississippi

Vicksburg is situated in southern Mississippi, near the Louisiana border. It is only 43 miles (69 kilometers) west of Jackson and 176 miles (283 kilometers) east of Shreveport. Vicksburg is the county seat of Warren County, and home to 26,407 people.

Due to its strategic position on the Mississippi River, Vicksburg was known as "the Gibralter of the Confederacy," and the 47-day long Siege of Vicksburg was one of the most important campaigns of the Civil War. Today's visitors can learn all about these battles at the Vicksburg National Military Park. The site includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, such as the Vicksburg National Cemetery, an Union gunboat, more than a hundred cannons, and 20 miles (32 kilometers) of reconstructed trenches. For more information about this chapter of the city's history, visit the Vicksburg Battlefield Museum.

Other local museums include the Jacqueline House African American Museum, Yesterday's Children Antique Doll and Toy Museum, and the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum. Housed in the building where Coca-Cola was first bottled in 1894, this museum features a reproduction of the bottling works, a 1900 soda fountain, along with many memorabilia and gift items.

Vicksburg's past is also reflected in its many heritage sites, old churches, and beautiful antebelleum homes. Must-see sights include the Old Court House Museum, the Martha Vick House, and the city's historic downtown. Another popular area is the Vicksburg Riverfront, where you'll find Mississippi boat tours, murals depicting the city's history, a beaufiful park, and four luxurious casinos. Movie-makers have also been attracted by Vicksburg's Southern charm, and the city has served as the filming locale for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Mississippi Burning.

Vicksburg is only minutes away from the Mississippi outdoors, where you'll find fantastic golfing, wildlife-viewing, and other recreation opportunities. Head to the Linden Plantation Gardens to admire beautiful gardens, or visit Eagle Lake for the chance to spot the magnificen bald eagle. Sportsmen and women will find great fishing, hunting, and other activities at the Chotard Landing Resort and at Tara Wildlife, Inc.

With its rich history and many attractions, consider Vicksburg for your next home!
