Wyoming

Wyoming has several nicknames: Big Wyoming, the Equality State, and the Cowboy State. With a population of only 493,782 and an area of 97,914 square miles (253,596 square kilometers), one can find a level of peace and privacy with, on average, only four other people per square mile. But there is one thing that brings the people together – Rodeo! From June to Labor Day, there is a rodeo almost every day and every night somewhere in Wyoming. Other than rodeo, Wyoming residents enjoy many different pastimes. In the summer, there is great hiking, golfing, and boating. In the winter, there is great skiing – both downhill and cross-country – snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. However, I couldn't see myself doing anything but putting on a big Stetson hat and riding on horseback.

Wyoming is a historic place that served as a resting-place for immigrants on the way to Oregon. Independence Rock, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Casper, is covered with the scratched names of the thousands of westbound settlers who passed it on the Oregon Trail. Wyoming was also the location of several famous battles between the Native Americans led by Chief Crazy Horse and the US Calvary.

The history doesn't stop there. The state's also a place rich with dinosaur fossils – a paleontologist's dream!

Wyoming has exceptional natural attractions as well and none are more famous than Yellowstone National Park – the first National Park in the US. Yellowstone is filled with geothermic activity, which results in geysers and thermal basins (the most well-known of them being Old Faithful).

Of other firsts, Wyoming is also the first state in which women had the right to vote, serve on juries, and hold public office. Hence the name The Equality State.

Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and is the most active cultural, economic, and political city in the state. Cheyenne is located 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Denver. Casper is located in the center of the state, is the second largest city in Wyoming, and is located at the convergence of all the old western trails. Jackson is one of the most popular destinations in the area, mainly due to its proximity to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
