United StatesAccording to the National Institute for Occupational Health & Safety, (NIOSH): • From 1980 through 1995,
at least 93,338 workers in the US died as a result
of trauma suffered on the job, an average of about
16 deaths per day.
• NIOSH estimates that
about 3.6 million occupational injuries were serious
enough to be treated in hospital emergency rooms
in 1998. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, in 2005: • There were 5,702 fatal
work-related injuries across all sectors, making
the rate at which fatal work injuries occurred in
2005 4.0 per 100,000 workers. Fatal highway incidents
are the most frequent type of fatal workplace event,
accounting for one in every four fatalities nationally.
• There were 564 workplace
homicides and 177 workplace suicides recorded. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities (IIF) program, in 2005: • There were 4,214,200
recorded cases of nonfatal injuries and illnesses
in private industry, with 1,234,700 cases involving
days away from work.
• Of the 4.2 million cases
of nonfatal injuries and illnesses, 4.0 million (94.2%)
were injuries and the remainder illnesses.
• The largest shares of
injuries were in the manufacturing sector (20%),
the healthcare and social assistance sector (16%),
and the retail trade sector (15%). CanadaAccording to the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada statistics for 2005: • There were 994,886 claims
made to Workers' Compensation boards.
• There were 1,097 fatalities
from work-related accidents or diseases.
• The average injury frequency
was 2.56 workers per 100 workers.
• And specifically regarding
the health and social services industries, there
were 41,261
time-loss injuries and six
fatalities. WorldwideThe International Labor Organization's information sheet Facts on Safety at Work estimates that: • An average of 6,000 people
worldwide die each day as a result of work-related
accidents or diseases, totaling more than 2.2 million
per year.
• Each year, workers suffer
approximately 270 million occupation accidents leading
