Hartford Hospital has been granted the highly coveted "Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Services" by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, part of the American Nurses Association. This award has been given to just over 100 hospitals in the U.S., and recognizes "excellence in all aspects of nursing services, from leadership and management philosophy to the quality of patient care."

Hartford Hospital, founded in 1854, is an 868 bed/48 bassinet, acute care hospital, situated on 65 acres of land in the south end of Hartford Connecticut. It is a major tertiary care and community health care center, serving a statewide patient population; has established clinical centers of excellence in Cancer Care, Cardiac Care, Mental Health Care, and Women's Health Care; is one of two centers in the state providing organ transplantation, and is a major provider of cardiovascular surgery; is designated as a Level I trauma center and operates the states' only helicopter transport service; and is the tertiary care center for a rapidly developing integrated delivery system. In 1994, The Institute of Living, a psychiatric hospital founded in 1822, combined with and became the Mental Health Division of Hartford Hospital. Hartford Hospital is a member of the Connecticut Health System, along with MidState Medical Center and Connecticut Children's Medical Center. The Hospital and its physicians provide a wide range of surgical and medical sub-specialty services at the community, secondary and tertiary level. These services include Allergy, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Critical Care Surgery, Dermatology, Diabetes Care, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Ear/Nose/Throat, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, Dentistry, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Hematology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology Medicine and Surgery, Ophthalmology, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedics, Peripheral Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Radiation Therapy, Rheumatology, Transplant Surgery, and Urology. In addition, a number of services are provided in the outpatient setting including; laboratory, rehabilitation, hemodialysis, general medicine, psychiatry, dentistry, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, audiology and speech therapy, endoscopy, cardiology, endocrinology, urology, infertility, family planning, and HIV services.

Hartford Hospital employs approximately 6,000 people and has a $515 million operating budget, with 1999 total net exceeding of $400 million. Hartford Hospital has 45 patient care and support buildings, and approximately 2.1 million occupied square feet of space. It has a medical staff of 828 physicians. In 1999, the hospital received 176,000 emergency room visits and admitted 36,023 patients.
