Bienvenue! Willkommen! Bitaemo! Each
year Regina welcomes hundreds of thousands
of visitors from around the globe. They come
for business and pleasure, to meet our people,
to partake in special events, to see firsthand
this remarkable city - clean, green and growing
- in the midst of the great Canadian plains.
Whatever draws you to Regina, come
prepared for a great time. This is no longer
the quiet farming town of settlement years.
Saskatchewan's capital city is the heartbeat
of the province; a modern and sophisticated
center of business and government. Regina's
skyline grows more magnificent each year, as
office and hotel towers reach for the sky.
The hospitality one finds in Regina
is legendary. It may have something to do with
the city's tradition of hosting royalty. Regina
has a long and proud association with the British
monarchy. It's no accident that Regina has
been called Canada's Queen City. In 1882, Princess
Louise christened a little town on Pile of
Bones Creek "Regina" - after her mother, Victoria,
the reigning Queen. The love affair with royalty
has continued ever since. In more
recent times, Regina has been a favourite stop
for royal tours of the Queen Mother, Queen
Elizabeth, Prince Phillip, and Prince Andrew
and Sarah, the Duke and Duchess of York. Reginans
pride themselves in rolling out the red carpet
for all their guests, whether they be of royal
lineage or not. The Economy:
Regina is the center of a multi-billion
dollar agricultural economy. But equally important,
as the capital city of Saskatchewan, Regina
is the center of government. Most provincial
government departments and crown corporations
are headquartered here. Industrial developments
continue to grow in Regina, with a major steel
plant and Canada's first heavy oil upgrader
being major private sector employers. Regina
is also the head office for Credit Union Central,
Co-Operators Insurance, and the Saskatchewan
Wheat Pool - the largest grain handling co-operative
in the world, as well as Crown Life and Farm
Credit Corporation. Our People:
Regina is a multicultural city
in the heart of a multicultural province -
probably the most ethnically diverse in all
of Canada. Saskatchewan is the only province
where both English and French when added together,
do not constitute a majority. The many
different nationalities that make up the Queen
City celebrate their roots year round - but
never more visibly than during the three-day
Mosaic festival - a city-wide party each spring
where ethnic food, music, song and drink flow
freely at pavilions representing countries
from around the globe. This spirit of camaraderie
and cooperation has built a city of warm-hearted
- some say "super-hearted" - people.
Regina is alive with museums, art galleries
and other cultural attractions and events throughout
the year. It has its own professional live
theatre companies, modern dance and ballet
troupes, and a world class concert hall that
is home to Canada's longest established symphony
orchestra. R.C.M.P.:
An international symbol of Canada, the red
coated Mountie, belongs to Regina. RCMP history
parallels the history of our city and has been
part of its life since the beginning. One hundred
years after the first group of Northwest Mounted
Police were sent to quell a rebellion, the
force still does its training here. Their museum
is one of Canada's premier tourist attractions.
Hospitality: If you've
ever heard of "western hospitality" you'll
know why it is famous after a visit to Regina. |
