Caritas Health Group is Alberta's largest faith-based
provider of health care. The organization was formed
in 1992 from the merger of what are now the Misericordia
and Grey Nuns Community Hospitals and the Edmonton
General Continuing Care Centre. Together these facilities
have served Edmonton and area for more than 100 years.
Caritas takes its name from a Latin expression for "love" and "charity." The word "caritas" encompasses the concepts of mercy, grace, goodwill, and helpfulness. The name was chosen upon the merger of the facilities to reflect the values and traditions of our founders?the Misericordia Sisters and the Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns) - who brought hope and healing to a rugged, pioneer land. As a Catholic organization extending care to people of all faiths and traditions, Caritas Health Group is sponsored by the Alberta Catholic Health Corporation. Caritas draws on a rich tradition of holistic and compassionate care, summed up in our Mission Statement: "Healing the Body, Enriching the Mind, Nurturing the Soul." Our programs and services combine leading edge science with a commitment to the values of dignity, respect, community responsiveness, responsible stewardship and concern for all. New funding announced in October 2005 will result in approximately 25% growth in patient capacity at Caritas Health Group facilities, and considerable opportunities for nursing and allied health care staff over the next several years. In the coming year, Caritas Health Group will be expanding its services at both the Grey Nuns and Misericordia Community Hospitals. Caritas Health Group is funded by the Provincial Government through the Capital Health Authority and is a valued partner within the integrated regional health system serving Edmonton, northern Alberta and beyond. |
