The Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission (FPSC) is a world leader in providing psychiatric care through its unique, multi-site health organization. A multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and other health care professionals, work in close partnership to provide specialized hospital and community-based services for adults with mental illness who are in conflict with the law. Our unified provincial forensic psychiatric services are provided in various clinics throughout the province of British Columbia.

The FPSC is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), which plans, manages and evaluates selected specialty and province-wide health care services across BC.

Forensic Psychiatrists
Vancouver Island and Northern BC Opportunities

This high profile mandate requires dynamic psychiatric leaders to join BC's Forensic Psychiatry Team. Ideal candidates will be adept at dealing with a variety of diagnoses and client populations. You will utilize your expertise to lead a multidisciplinary treatment team in providing services to clients who are deemed unfit to stand trial or not criminally responsible due to mental disorder, probationers, and persons on bail. Your analytical thinking and diagnostic talents will come into play as you provide assessment, diagnosis, as well as treatment and discharge planning for an assigned group of clients with complex psychiatric disorders. Drawing on your in-depth knowledge of mental disorders, symptoms and treatments, you will be responsible for providing court assessments under the Criminal Code of Canada. Guidelines for presentence and probation reports are provided. You will also be expected to maintain professional relationships with other forensic mental health professionals, and have opportunities to participate in regular professional education programs, quality assurance projects, teaching, and research initiatives. Success in these roles will demand a compassionate, level-headed individual with extensive hands-on experience and a background in treating a wide range of complex clinical problems. As you provide assessment and diagnoses on various clients, you will utilize your proven knowledge of pharmacology and clinical experience to formulate effective treatment plans. In addition to being a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with a Psychiatric specialty, you have successfully completed LMCC examinations Part I and II, and are eligible for full medical license to practice psychiatry in the province of British Columbia. You possess solid clinical judgement, and proven ability to treat complex cases with multiple diagnoses, including Axis II disorders, substance misuse and criminal behaviours. The ability to make ethical decisions, while maintaining your integrity and reliability, and work in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to manage conflict and resolve issues will also be of paramount importance.
